Is PBO Registration Worth It?

Help us weigh the compliance cost against the upside of becoming a Public Benefit Organisation.

ADVICE   CALL

WHAT WE NEED YOUR HELP WITH

We need to understand whether to register as a Public Benefit Organisation (PBO) because we must unlock sustainable funding, meet funder requirements and avoid sinking scarce volunteer time and R 9 000+ on a step that may not pay back.” We're also concerned about any legal implications if being a PBO we might not be aware of.

OUR SPECIFIC QUESTIONS

PBO Viability — Is PBO status realistic for a small, volunteer-led body like ours?
Ongoing Costs — What annual admin, audit and other hidden expenses should we expect?
Trading Risks — How do safe revenue thresholds and trading rules differ for NPOs vs PBOs?
Learning Resources — Where can we find trustworthy hubs or guides to learn more?

WHERE WE ARE TODAY

Our organisation is:
A registered NPO run 100 % by volunteers with no paid secretary or finance officer
We have no SARS exemptions yet and do not issue donations certificates
Funded by membership fees alone at present

Funding to Date:
Membership fees (increased from 50 → 200 members) which cover basics but not growth - this is our main source of funding
In addition - our current funding applications have to flow through partner universities – clunky and limiting so we’re looking for other sources of funding
Typical grant-makers insist on PBO status which means we can’t access those pools of funding at this stage

Our challenge is:
Need to make a strategic decision to increase funding
Assessing NPOs vs PBOs
Our current quote is R 9 000 for SARS registration and Tax compliance in order for us to move forward with PBO registration
Assessing if the upfront cost is worth it and understanding what other hidden costs there may be

HOW YOUR HELP WILL IMPACT US

We'll have more insight on pros and cons for NPOs and PBOs and have better questions to talk to our accountant about
to enable us to make a better decision

This will prevent wasted spend, free leaders to focus on services, and potentially help increase funding options over 12 months.

  • A South-African tax/compliance specialist
  • Can explain complex requirements in plain language
